Parts Work Therapy

What is Parts Work?

Have you ever felt like you had conflicting thoughts in your head about the same situation? For example, when you are invited to a social event after a long week of work, part of you might really want to go, while another part of you just wants to stay home and rest. This is completely normal, and Parts Work helps you understand these different “parts” of yourself.

Parts Work gives us the language to describe and work with these various sides of ourselves. We all have different parts that carry different feelings, thoughts, and reactions. Some parts might be motivated and social, while others might feel anxious or tired. Parts Work allows us to get to know these different parts, understand why they feel the way they do, and help them work together so we can feel more balanced.

How Does Parts Work Help?

When we experience stress, trauma, or difficult emotions, certain parts of us can become overwhelmed or stuck. For example, a part of you might feel scared or anxious because of something that happened in the past, even though you know you are safe now.

Parts Work allows us to:

  • Understand Inner Conflict: By identifying the different parts of yourself, we can explore the reasons behind conflicting thoughts and feelings.

  • Heal Old Wounds: Some parts may be holding onto past pain or trauma. Through Parts Work, we can give these parts the attention and care they need to heal.

  • Find Balance: Parts Work helps all the different parts of you communicate and work together so you can make decisions that feel right and live in a way that feels more balanced and peaceful.

What Does This Look Like in Therapy?

In therapy, we might explore different parts of you in a conversation.

For example:

  • A part of you might want to excel at work and push yourself to meet every expectation, while another part feels exhausted and just wants to rest because it is overwhelmed by stress.

  • You might have a part that feels anger or resentment in a relationship because of past hurt, while another part feels guilty and tries to keep the peace, avoiding conflict even when you are unhappy.

By giving these parts a voice, we can start to heal and bring balance back into your life. Parts Work can help you feel more in control of your thoughts and emotions and help you move forward in a way that feels good to you.

Is Parts Work Right for You?

If you often feel like you have inner conflict or if different parts of you seem to be pulling you in different directions, Parts Work can help. It is especially useful for those who have experienced trauma, difficult life experiences, or stress, and are looking to better understand themselves.
